- Abstract
The article describes the case of a 53-year-old male HIV-positive patient with a history of abdominal pain, fatigue and diarrhea, and who developed Shigella flexneri infection resistant to ciprofloxacin and nonsusceptibility to azithromycin. The diagnosis was confirmed after fecal culture, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), phenotypic identification, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The prevalence of Shigella in Canada and the U.S. is discussed.
