- Abstract
Thin films of poly(methyl methacrylate)/azobismaleimides (PMMA/BMI) have been prepared and characterized. The UV irradiated samples are compared with unirradiated ones to investigate the effect of photoirradiation on the surface characteristics. Properties of these samples such as photophysical behavior and surface characteristics (static contact angle and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements) were investigated. Photoisomerization upon UV irradiation (365 nm light) and thermal recovery isomerization was monitored by the change in electronic absorption spectra. The relative wettability and hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of the film surfaces (irradiated and unirradiated) was determined by measuring the contact angle using a drop shape analysis. The values of contact angles change with surface topography, surface tension of the liquid and level of interaction between the liquid and solid. The surface topography/morphology of the solid surfaces (with/without irradiation treatment - 365 nm) was investigated by AFM images.
