- Abstract
Objective: to investigate the advantages and potential uses found by Family Health Strategy physicians and nurses in Caicó, RN, in the use of phytotherapy and medicinal plants in Primary Care. Method: a descriptive and qualitative study developed with 19 health professionals. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, between January and February 2011, and were processed using Content Analysis. The study was approved by the Ethics in Research Committee of the State University of Rio Grande do Norte (CAAE 0081.0.428.000-10). Results: six thematic categories were constructed: Good therapeutic results, mainly attributed to the low number of collateral and adverse effects; Cost-savings and easy access, due to local and national abundance; Connection of scientific knowledge with popular practice, as a means of dialogue with the community; Theoretical basis, brought about by undergraduate or graduate training; and Monitoring of consumption, being dispensed in the Basic Family Health Unit under the guidance of trained professionals. Conclusion: through the arguments presented by the professionals studied and the interest shown by many of them, there is a clear potential for the development and implementation of projects related to this theme in the city of Caicó, RN. However, this requires the efforts of the municipal health administration and the state government, in terms of making investments. We emphasize, especially, the importance of education in integrative and complementary practices in health training, so that learning opportunities are offered to undergrads.
