- Abstract
The article reports on the impact of workload on service time and patient safety in hospitals. Two different health-care delivery services were analyzed through operational data taken from transport services and cardiothoracic surgery. It was found that hospital workers can accelerate the service time as the workload is increased as patients of cardiothoracic surgery had the length of their stay reduced by 2 days when workloads were increased by 10%. However, acceleration of service is difficult to sustain.
