- Abstract
The article explores how bodies were envisioned in early American popular culture and medicine. It considers such texts as "Aristotle’s Masterpiece," "Domestic Medicine" by William Buchan, "Dissertation on the Influence of the Passions upon Disorders of the body" by William Falconer, and a 1776 letter written by American soldier Zachariah Beal in which he relays his beliefs that disease could be transfered through letters sent when ill.
