- Abstract
The purpose of this research is to determine the opinions of pre-service secondary school mathematics teachers about scenario-based learning (SBL). This study was designed as a qualitative study and its participants were fifteen mathematics teacher candidates who were studying in the primary school mathematics teaching department of a state university in the fall semester of the 2018-2019 academic year. The research started with twelve participants, and at the end of the process, the research was completed with five pre-service teachers who had the appropriate conditions for the implementation of the scenarios. During the research process, collective and individual sessions were held with pre-service teachers. Pre-service teachers were interviewed before the process, and then an information seminar about SBL was given. Before and after the application, interviews were held with the candidates who went through the scenario writing process. With the structured and semi-structured interview protocols, the opinions of the candidates were taken orally and in writing, and the oral interviews were recorded as audio. These collected data were analyzed by content analysis and informal observations were also used while doing this. As a result of the analysis, it was seen that pre-service teachers did not have any knowledge about SBL at the beginning of the process, but they could make comments based on the words ‘scenario’ and ‘learning’. In addition, the participants will learn about the scenarios to be used in SBL; being suitable for the learning outcome, not causing misconceptions, being suitable for the level of the student, having an understandable language, being fun, being related to daily life, attracting the attention of the student, etc. stated that it should have such features. However, they stated that they had problems in managing the classroom and reaching the goals during the application. The majority of teacher candidates; Although their expectations of facilitating students’ understanding, gaining empathy, associating mathematics with daily life, improving speaking skills, gaining responsibility, and concretizing concepts were not met, all of them stated that they wanted to use SBL practices in their professional lives.
