- Abstract
Although early newspapers suggest a considerable circulation of guitar scores since the 19th century in Brazil, the guitar repertoire from before 1930 is still fairly unknown. The reason may be that the original sources are either lost or survived in single or few printed copies, or else exist only in rare manuscripts. This article presents one of these pieces, "Souvenir du Pará op. 10" (M. A. Reichert), a work originally composed for flute and piano. In 1909, Melchior Cortez (1882-1947) transcribed the piece for guitar using the tremolo, one of the first occasions in which this technique is seen in guitar scores published in Rio de Janeiro. Through a survey of sources and a rare edition belonging to "Coleção Chiquinha Gonzaga" (IMS), our goals are: to rescue the 1909 publication by tracing a brief background of the two works as well as the people involved in this process; to introduce some of the criteria that supported a new edition, carried out with the aim of disseminating the guitar repertoire produced in Brazil during this period.
