- Authors
Bower, Amy; Vazquez-Cuervo, Jorge; Comstock, Eleni
- Abstract
This article discusses the barriers faced by people with disabilities in the field of ocean science. While diversity and inclusion efforts in the geoscience community often focus on race, ethnicity, and gender, disability status is often overlooked. People with disabilities are underrepresented in the STEM workforce and face higher unemployment rates compared to those without disabilities. The article highlights obstacles such as physical access, access to electronic documents, accessible conferences, and fieldwork challenges. It also emphasizes the importance of perception and stigma in limiting the participation of individuals with disabilities in ocean science. The article concludes by suggesting tangible solutions and the need for a collective commitment to achieve true inclusion and equity for people with disabilities in ocean science.
