- Abstract
Background: There are many different modalities to evaluate the bone mineral density. However; the method of Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry is mostly used in clinical applications. The aim of this study is to search the reference values of bone mineral density of the femoral neck, total hip, and lumbar spine in healthy children at Sanliurfa Region and to examine the relationship of these values with sex, age, height, weight and body mass index. Methods: Ten male and 10 female children from each age between the ages of 5-17 (totally 260) were examined, The Hologic 4500 QDR Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry equipment was used to measure the values of bone mineral density and bone mineral content of lumbar spine and femur. Results: The mean bone mineral density and bone mineral content values of lumbar spine, femoral neck and total hip have been established for boys and girls in each age group. The bone mineral density and bone mineral content values of femur and lumbar spine were significantly correlated with age, height, weight and body mass index in both sexes (p<0.05 and r>0.8 for both) We could not reveal any statistically significant differences between the sexes with regard to bone mineral density and bone mineral content in all age groups (p>0.05). Conclusions: This study presents the reference bone mineral density and bone mineral content values of pediatric age groups in Sanliurfa Region. We think that this study will be useful for the early diagnosis and treatment of the bone mineral loss in the childhood.
