- Abstract
The author presents insights on severe life-threatening acute anemia which can cause tissue and major organ damage and mortality due to inadequate oxygen delivery with consequent tissue and organ hypoxia. Topics discussed include the sensitivity of the human brain to acute anemia, the response of the body to acute normovolemic anemia, such as increased heart rate and decreased systemic vascular resistance, and clinical trials that tested liberal and conservative transfusion strategies.
