- Abstract
During routine inspection, unusual pits/holes in aluminum pipes inside the cold box associated with a cryogenic column (Air Separation Unit) from a liquid nitrogen and oxygen production plant were reported. The purpose of this study was to understand the reason for failure, particularly the most probable mechanism of the observed localized corrosion. These tubes suffered from localized alkali corrosion at high pH caused by the presence of moisture/water. Corrosion occurred in areas where electrolyte accumulated under specific conditions.
