- Abstract
This article focuses on a study related to formation of an alumina-silicon carbide nanocomposite. Alumina-silicon carbide ceramics have been increasingly studied in the past few years as the combination should provide a novel ceramic with chemical and oxidation resistance at high temperatures. The properties of sub-micron grained composites are generally superior to those manufactured from larger particles and the importance of nanostructured materials will increase. In this paper high intensity ball milling of a mixture of silicon dioxide, aluminum and graphite powders is examined to determine whether the formation of a composite of alumina and silicon carbide can be achieved at a low temperature.
