- Abstract
A study evaluated the outcomes of breast MRI with or without mammography in women with dense breasts. The study found that MRI screening increased rates of early-stage cancer detection and false-positive recalls for women with dense breasts, but did not decrease advanced or interval cancers. The study suggests that breast density alone should not be the sole criterion for recommending supplemental breast MRI, and that screening should be based on a woman's breast cancer risk to maximize benefits and minimize harms. Another document discusses the findings of two studies that examined the use of MRI in reducing advanced breast cancer incidence in high-risk women. The studies found a statistically significant reduction in advanced breast cancer incidence among women who underwent MRI. The document also discusses the development of a risk model that can be used to determine screening intervals and the need for supplemental imaging in high-risk women. The authors note that further research is needed to examine the association between breast cancer risk and mortality. The research was funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute and the National Cancer Institute, among others.
