- Abstract
Accurate detection and identification of Clavibacter michiganensis subp. sepedonicus (Cms), causal agent of the bacterial ring rot disease of potato is essential for preventing spread of the disease in domestic and international trade of seed potatoes. While the disease is easily diagnosed when typical symptoms are present, the pathogen may go undetected when present in asymptomatic (latent) tuber infections. Testing seed lots by ELISA is an effective means of indexing for the presence of Cms latent infections. ELISA-positive test results must be confirmed, however, by immunofluorescence or PCR to make a positive determination. A positive detection of Cms can be further verified by bioassay on eggplant and/or isolation and characterization of the pathogen to establish unequivocally the identification of Cms.
