- Abstract
The article presents a study which examined the possible effects of a gastrointestinal lipase inhibitor Orlistat on the intestinal absorption of oxalate and on the urinary levels of oxalate excretion in overweight patients. Calcium, oxalate and citrate levels were identified in a 24-h urine collection. Results showed that urinary oxalate excretion significantly increased in 34/55 patients. These indicate that increased intestinal absorption of dietary oxalate due to Orlistat could contribute to urinary oxalate excretion.
