- Abstract
The article discusses a study which examines the incidence of cleft pathology in New Orleans, Louisiana before and the after the 2005 Hurricane Katrina. Findings reveal that the cases of cleft palate (CP) were higher nine months after the disaster. It shows that there was a higher incidence recorded among African Americans than Americans. It concludes that the increased stress reactions and teratogenic factors associated to the hurricane might be attributable to the high CP cases in the city.
