- Abstract
This document, titled "Clinical relevance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa viable but non-culturable forms in cystic fibrosis," discusses the presence and significance of viable but non-culturable (VBNC) forms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in patients with cystic fibrosis (pwCF). VBNC cells are dormant and antibiotic-tolerant bacterial forms that are unable to grow on microbiological media but can still cause infections. The study found that VBNC P. aeruginosa cells were detected in the sputum of pwCF, particularly in those with chronic infections. Antibiotic treatments, such as aminoglycosides, were found to induce the VBNC state in some patients. The study emphasizes the need for further research to understand the role of antibiotics in VBNC cell development and to validate these preliminary findings.
