The Pregnant Drinker.
- Authors
Fielding, Jonathan; Yankauer, Alfred
- Abstract
The article shares the authors' insights on the effects of alcoholic drinking on pregnant women in the U.S. In the ancient world, wine has been praised as natural stimulants or relaxants while being condemned and prohibited at the same time. The deleterious effect of alcohol on the fetus has been found in ancient literature. Excessive drinking is also considered the most frequently known teratogenic cause of mental deficiency in Western countries. Fetal alcoholic syndrome has been clearly linked to the pregnant alcoholic. The dysmorphic features of fetal alcoholic syndrome include facial anomalies, deficiency in growth and mental deficiency with possible behavioral dysfunction.
