- Abstract
The effective and complete management of pain is becoming the key of modern surgical practice. The well management not only minimizes patient suffering but also can reduce morbidity and, at the end, hospital costs. The aims of this study were therefore to prospectively measure pain on arrival to the postanesthesia care unit and before discharge and then to determine the correlation of 3 unidimensional pain scales: Visual Analogue Scale, Verbal Rating Scale, and Numerical Rating Scale. Patients who were scheduled for surgery were approached to participate in a voluntary, informed basis, in this prospective, longitudinal, and descriptive study. Data of 192 patients were available for analysis, which demonstrated good correlation and the authors concluded that the three scales were a reliable method of pain assessment. The most important choice is not the category of scale per se, but the settings related to its use.
