- Abstract
Exceptions include: near or below-average sea-surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific associated with La Niña conditions in the latter half of the year; a relatively cool area south of Greenland and Iceland; and patches of below average sea-surface temperatures in the Southern Ocean where warming has generally been slower than the rest of the world. Global indicators of climate change - global temperature, ocean heat content, sea level, Arctic sea ice extent, glacier mass balance and concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere - provide a robust and physically-consistent picture of on-going global warming due to anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases. Despite unusually high temperatures across much of the Arctic, temperatures over the Greenland ice sheet were near to the recent average (1981-2010) in 2020 and surface mass balance was, at +349Gt, near the 40-year average for the satellite record of +341Gt. Ocean heat Ocean heat content is a direct measure of heat energy accumulating in the ocean.
