- Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was early detection of the severity of gingivitis in Type I diabetic children by measuring the level of Heme in their saliva. Materials and Methodology: Unstimulated saliva of approximately 5 ml was collected from two groups; Group 1 - Children with Type 1 diabetes aged 6-15 years and Group II -Children without diabetes. Onestep lateral flow immunoassay blood test is a commercially available in vitro chromatographic method (Clarity Diagnostics iFOB Rapid Test Cassette, Boca Raton, FL, USA), a CLIA waived test to detect blood, which is not detected by visual observation. The test cassette was placed on a clean, dry, and flat surface. Saliva was added, and positive results were obtained if both the control (C) and test (T) line of the strip in the device developed a color. The color intensity of the band was recorded on a semi-quantitative scale ranging from A to H. Samples that did not produce a reaction in the test (T) but produced a reaction in the control (C) line were identified as negative. Invalid tests produced no reaction in either the control (C) and test (T) lines of the strip in the device. The severity of gingivitis was compared in both groups and was also correlated with gingival clinical score using the Loe and Silness gingival index. Results and Conclusion: The study is in progress and will be completed by February 2024.
