- Title
The instrumentalization of St. Lucian.
- Authors
Carrington, Lawrence D.
- Abstract
This paper examines the instrumentalization of language in St. Lucia, one of the Winward Islands of the Caribbean. Progress toward the instrumentalization of St. Lucian has reached the point where direct controlled intervention in the language behavior of the society needs to be effected. It is pointed out that the intervention must take place in areas where the usefulness of information transfer can offset possible adverse response to the disturbance of the established idealized relationships between the languages of the society. If instrumentalization of the language is to be effected, modernization of the expressive capabilities of the vocabulary is an immediate necessity.
