- Abstract
The article focuses on the conservation of the indigenous crayfish and Austropotamobius italicus through stock assessment in central Italy, and identification of some aspects of its elective habitat. The surveys conducted in nine streams (WI) harboring A. italicus and in 10 streams (WO) where crayfish populations became extinct showed that the former species is proven to be a K-selected species with slow growth rate and a long life expectancy. The streams WI and WO differ in the abundance of allochthonous plant detritus but not in the taxonomic composition of their macrointervertebrate communities as shown in the Principal Components Analyses. Tables and figures of the survey results are also presented.
