- Authors
TURTIAINEN, JUSSI; VÄÄNÄNEN, ARI
- Abstract
The article discusses the nature of masculinity among Finnish metal industry workers during Finland's era of social change that followed World War II. Focus is given to masculinity as it applies to young men's initial transition to metal industry employment, the workers' establishment of personal space, and workers' physical ability to carry out metal industry work. The author concludes that while male industrial culture provided positive social benefits to metal industry workers, it simultaneously required these workers to risk their physical well-being and health.
