- Abstract
The article presents a study that evaluates the importance of protected areas (PA) in preserving bird diversity, especially the endemic and forest species in the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The study stated that the island has one of the highest numbers of native bird species and the most important endemic bird areas in the world. The study suggested the importance of buffer areas for increasing small reserves to improve its conservation value. The study showed that the uniqueness in bird species composition among PA emphasizes the significance of establishing a reserve network in major altitudinal zones. The study used birds as ecological indicators since birds are easy to sample, vital in key ecosystem processes and high species richness than other group of animals.
