- Abstract
"The Culture of Male Beauty in Britain: From the First Photographs to David Beckham" by Paul R. Deslandes explores the origins and evolution of male beauty standards in Britain from the 1830s to the early 2000s. The book examines how ideas of male beauty were shaped and disseminated through technologies, commodities, and practices, rather than focusing solely on philosophical or aesthetic discussions. It also highlights the intersection of appearance, gender, and sexual subjectification, and how consumer culture played a central role in shaping these dynamics. The book argues that the contemporary obsession with the male body has its roots in the consumer culture of the late nineteenth century, rather than twentieth-century sexual liberalization.
