- Title
Bisexuality and Biblical Interpretation or How an Obscure Biblical Narrative Enters the Fundamentalist Imaginary as a Buttress of Biphobia.
- Authors
Carden, Michael
- Abstract
The article examines the reception of a relatively obscure biblical narrative in the context of Christian homophobia and proscription of same sex desire. It discusses how contemporary Christian fundamentalists have appropriated modern notions of bisexual identity, notions not available for medieval homophobic reading strategies. The article also relates and criticizes the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19 in the Old Testament. The author believed that a homophobic or biphobic reading of the story is a natural one but a Christian construct. It has been said that biphobia is the prejudice against hatred and fear of bisexuals and bisexuality.
