- Abstract
Deafness is, perhaps, a disability that "doen't show". Therefore, it is sometimes not believed to be responsible for a great problem in the development and in the life of the people who suffer from it. However, this population is socially and psychologically isolated from the world of sonant information. Even though there aren't any biological or physiological differences between a hearing and a Deaf person, when it comes to their sexual development, Deaf people lack a great deal of information and have false beliefs on the topic. In work sessions with young Deaf men and women, it has been observed that: 1) In general, there is a feeling of fear towards the practice of sexuality, since this subject is associated to danger; 2) The little onformation that Deaf people have about sexuality is still full of myths and taboos; 3) This population doesn't generally receive information about sexuality, and this makes them face an unknown world that makes them more vulnerable to abuse and deceit. This paper conclusions state the urgent need to establish programs of sexuality education, workshops and lectures by specialists in the topic who are able to use sign language, as well as the need to continuedoing research on this matter.
