- Abstract
Cihan Aktaş is a significant name in the post 90s modern short story scene in Turkey. Having published her first story in 1991, the author has published eleven story books so far. In addition to the short stories and novels, the author has also written a number of essays and research books on the subject of women, and especially Muslim women in Turkey. The subject of women is arguably the leading theme in the stories of Cihan Aktaş. Another prominent theme in the author's stories is the issue of “international migration". Having previously addressed the issue in various story books, the author has focused on the "international migration" issue particularly in the stories collected in her book titled ‘Murmur in the Footsteps' ('Ayak İzlerinde Uğultu'). Cihan Aktaş tells the stories of the persons who migrated to or were forced to migrate to another country through individual stories. The author's stories mostly feature characters who have migrated to another country from Turkey. However, her stories also include characters that migrated from countries like Iran, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and near eastern countries. Aktaş also tells the stories of the characters that migrated to Turkey. This article focuses on the characters portrayed in the stories of Cihan Aktaş -written from 2000 onwards- that migrated to another country from their country of origin. The subject of “international migration” covered in the author's stories has been discussed in this article in conjunction with the arguments raised by the author as to the reasons for such story characters' departure from their respective countries, their situation in their host countries, their perspective on their country after having left there, their willingness or unwillingness to go back to their countries.
