- Abstract
This article explores the impact of cardiovascular disease (CVD) on older women with chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD is a global health concern, particularly affecting women. Patients with CKD, especially those requiring kidney replacement therapy, have a shorter life expectancy and a higher risk of CVD. The article emphasizes the importance of accurately diagnosing and predicting CKD in older women, while also considering gender disparities in the diagnosis, treatment, outcomes, and evidence base of CVD in CKD. It discusses various risk factors and mechanisms of CVD in older women, including metabolic factors, socioeconomic factors, ethnicity, and hormonal changes. The article suggests that a comprehensive definition of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) is needed to understand the burden of disease in women, but interventions should focus on mechanisms directly relevant to women. The text also addresses the cardiovascular health of pregnant women and its implications for future generations, highlighting that CKD and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy increase the risk of adverse neonatal outcomes and the development of CKD, hypertension, and diabetes in future generations. It further notes that menopausal women and women with CKD have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and that women have different vascular characteristics compared to men. The article emphasizes the importance of addressing gender disparities in cardiovascular research and the need for inclusive clinical trials that prioritize women's health goals.
