- Abstract
The objective of this study is to understand the state of a set of practices known as tequio in some indigenous and rural societies in Mexico, which have contributed to the local development of various rural communities. Using the theoretical perspective and categories developed by Pierre Bourdieu, the sociospatial transformations experienced in the locality of Santa María Atexcac, in the municipality of Huejotzingo, Puebla, are analyzed, as well as the factors that condition the continuity or weakening of the tequio system. It was found that the tequio system has undergone resemantization, resulting in two subfields or subsystems: social and symbolic, which give meaning to the continuity and weakening of the practices. While practices associated with social capital -collective work and cooperationremain in place due to their functionality, rootedness, and embodiment, symbolic practices -related to the system of community positions-encounter more challenges in their continuity due to the processes of religious diversification, secularization, and modernization in the late 20th century.
