- Abstract
The aim of the present work consists in to observe the paleoenvironmental changes in outer shelf between Guanabara Bay and Cabo Frio through benthic foraminifera analysis. The studied samples are distributed in two well cores Prima 2 and SEC 1, perpendicular to the coast, from depths 137 m and 121 m, respectively. The well cores presented mud sediments predominantly (Prima 2) and sandy sediments (SEC 1), high species richness sand abundance. The cluster analysis showed one biofacies in the core Prima 2 and two biofacies in the core SEC 1. The vertical pattern distribution of the foraminifera species presented quite variable, due to the response of the foraminifera to the deposition conditions during the last 25.000 years B.P. The radiocarbon dating (14C AMS) of the Prima 2 revealed the presence of sediments which were deposited before the last global deglaciation (LGM). It also revealed the whole core SEC 1 is transgressive, with sedimentary deposits post-LGM, dated from Late Pleistocene and Holocene. The foraminifera spacial pattern distribution is strongly associated with depth, sediments, available and quality of organic matter.
