- Abstract
Introduction: Dyslipidemia are metabolic alterations closely related to the atherosclerotic process and hence cardiovascular disease, its local and global prevalence has exhibited significant variations, so the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of lipid disorders and associated factors in Cuenca city, Ecuador. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 318 individuals of both sexes, randomly selected. Dyslipidemia were defined according to the ATPIII criteria, considering that individual dyslipidemic with at least 1 lipid disorder. A logistic regression model was performed to identify the main associated factors in a multivariate context. Results: The prevalence of dyslipidemia was 82.4% (86.8% in women and 76.5% men). The most common lipid alteration was isolated low HDL-C. After adjustment in a multivariate model for dyslipidemia, the risk factor that showed stronger association was the presence of overweight (OR = 3.99, 95% CI 1.65 to 9.63, P <0.01) followed by calorie intake and physical activity in leisure time as a protective factor. Conclusion: The prevalence of dyslipidemia in Cuenca city is alarming, with quantity exceeding previous reports in our area and even the frequency in other Latin American cities. We need to identify the main determinants of the low HDL-C considering its high prevalence and lead efforts to control risk factors, especially those linked to a healthy lifestyle (diet and physical activity).
