- Abstract
Fixed orthodontic treatment carries an increased risk of enamel decalcification and white-spot lesions (WSLs), or white-spot caries. Because of this risk, both economic and oral health-related factors must be managed. If WSLs occur prior to the completion of orthodontic treatment (eg, following the omission of bracket sealants in combination with inadequate oral hygiene), questions may emerge about the sequence of WSL treatment. Treatment of WSLs by infiltration during fixed orthodontic treatment is considered somewhat laborious because brackets must be removed and rebonded. For WSL management to be successful, it is crucial to have appropriate timing of infiltration as well as a consensus between the general dentist and the orthodontist concerning treatment responsibilities. This article describes two modern techniques: fixed lingual orthodontics for prophylaxis and WSL infiltration for postorthodontic treatment of WSLs.
