- Abstract
The article describes the role of critical thinking for social work students in making ethically grounded decisions. The 2008 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) emphasize the need for students to develop and use critical thinking. The authors consider critical thinking to be a bridge between the explicit and implicit curricula. They also contend that there is no consensus on a definition for critical thinking, nor is there a universally accepted means to develop it. The authors suggest that social work educators should create a classroom atmosphere conducive to questioning accepted knowledge and challenging bias to develop critical thinking in their students. Critical theory in relation to the development of critical thinking in social work students is also discussed.
