- Title
ACADEMIC/PRACTITIONER INTERCHANGES: SUGGESTED GUIDELINES.
- Authors
Zody, Richard E.
- Abstract
In a cooperative effort, the International City Management Association and the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration developed a proposal in 1974 for a project to strengthen urban management education. One component of the project dealt with the development of academic/practitioner interchanges and guidelines for assisting institutions in creating such programs. With the funding of the proposal, a subcommittee of the project's advisory committee was created to develop the academic/practitioner guidelines and to monitor several academic/practitioner interchanges funded by the project. An academic institution involved in an interchange program offers its faculty additional opportunities to acquire applied knowledge, research skills, and experience in urban management. For urban institutions and managers an interchange program presents a viable mechanism for both organizational and professional development in addition to strengthening urban management education. The article presents some guidelines as a basis for creating an interchange program.
