- Abstract
The book "The Life of Syr Thomas More," completed by Ro. Ba. in 1599, after mentioning Henry VIII's "inordinate affection to Dame Anne" and other failings, gives an anecdote. A. W. Reed noted that the"trial" of Pius V mentioned in the anecdote is unknown from other sources, and thought it suggested Ro. Ba. was a West Countryman. The incident may thus help indicate who Ro. Ba. was. If Pius V's trial at Carmarthen took place in 1592 (Pius had been dead since 1572), it would be when the town was seeing trials of Catholics in real earnest.
