- Abstract
This document is a reply to a letter to the editor regarding the use of large language models (LLMs) in radiology research. The authors agree that a deeper evaluation of LLMs is necessary and call upon radiologists, data scientists, linguists, and engineers to develop and test the applicability and explainability of LLMs in improving radiologists' workflow. LLMs have the potential to go beyond generating radiology reports and can be used for clinical decision support, integrating diverse data, patient scheduling, and scientific writing. The authors emphasize the need for a rigorous evaluation of LLMs to establish their position in healthcare and ensure patient care and safety. They also highlight the importance of establishing robust regulatory frameworks for the development, validation, adoption, and integration of LLMs into routine radiology workflows, with consideration for cost-benefit, economic aspects, ethical considerations, and the fast evolution of these technologies. The authors encourage the establishment of multidisciplinary task force groups to promote a balanced and responsible use of LLMs in radiology.
