- Abstract
Introduction: Due to the correlation between the presence of median diastema and bullying, with its psychosocial implications, this topic needs to be widely researched. Objective: Evaluate the influence of a median diastema in children, regarding the perception of dentofacial esthetics among orthodontists, laypersons, and children. Materials and Methods: Two frontal full-face smile photographs of one girl and one boy, aged between 10 and 11 years, were manipulated to obtain smiles with an increasing pattern of a median diastema (0.0mm - control, 1.0mm; 2.0mm; 3.0mm and 4.0mm), totaling ten images. Afterward, they were randomly allocated to an online survey. Images were analyzed by 321 individuals (107 orthodontists, 107 laypersons, and 107 children). Each evaluator was asked to assign a score from 1 to 5 to each image, according to their concept of pleasantness. Data were evaluated using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey post-hoc test, with a significance level of 5%. Results: To the orthodontists, the control image was the most pleasant, and to the laypersons, the control image, and the 1.0 mm diastema. To the children, the control image, the 1.0 mm and 2.0 mm diastema were the most pleasant. All groups of evaluators judged the images with 4.0 mm diastema as the most unpleasant. Conclusion: Esthetic acceptability threshold for the presence of a median diastema in children was different among the groups. Orthodontists detected any diastema as unpleasant, while diastemas of 1.0 mm and 2.0 mm were not detected as unpleasant by laypersons and children, respectively.
