- Abstract
Nutrition facts provide basic information on the nutrient content of foods, but the complexity of the quantitative information on the back of the packaging means that it is not easily accessible and understood by ordinary consumers. Front-of-pack labelling can complement nutrient declarations by providing convenient, relevant and easy-to-understand information. The European Commission has stated that it wants to empower consumers to make informed, healthy and sustainable food choices and planned to propose harmonised front-of-pack nutrition labelling in the fourth quarter of 2022. However, given the controversy that the various proposals for harmonised labelling have generated, the EC has allowed more time to evaluate possible approaches. This article summarises selected nutrition labelling schemes.
