- Abstract
In Brazil, the population suffers from a deficit in basic sanitation services, mainly due to five factors: slowness in public policies aimed at sanitation, lack of investment in urban planning, unavailability of resources, ineffective legislation and a process of accelerated urbanization. There are several limiting factors in the development of basic sanitation in Brazil. The indicators themselves point to the relationship between lack of basic sanitation and health, such as the growth of diseases attributed to the lack of potable water and the absence of sewage service, mainly. This work seeks to provide a review of the literature on basic sanitation in Brazil and in the city of Sousa-PB, through the reading of articles, books, dissertations and theses. Finally, a historical survey of the most relevant historical events and evolutions of legislation dealing with sanitation in Brazil and in the municipality of Sousa-PB was obtained.
