- Abstract
Objective: This study was planned to evalute the impact of father's socio-demographic characteristics on spousal support and breastfeeding success. Method: The descriptive and cross-sectional study were realized between May, and November 2017 with 78 fathers who worked at private day care homes and had 0-24 month-old babies or fathers whose children were in this day care homes. A questionnaire including 20 questions were filled by voluntereed fathers. In analysis of the data, percentage, arithmetic average, frequency and chi-square test were used. Results: It was found that the fathers aged 20-30 years, graduated from a university, living in urban area, having one child, and higher economic status and a nuclear family had taken pregnancy decision with their wife, gone to pregnancy control, participated in a training programme designed for fathers, and talked about breastfeeding and its benefits with their wives at a statistically significantly higher rate (p<0.05). It was found that the children of fathers who gave spousal support were breastfed for 6 months and there were statistically significant difference between fathers who did and did not give spousal support for their wives (p<0.05). Conclusion: The study showed that 20-30 year-old fathers with one child, higher economic status and nuclear family who were graduated from university, and lived in urban area, supported their partners, and had a positive attitude towards breatfeeding and mothers who were supported by their husbands had higher breastfeeding success.
