- Abstract
The article provides insights into a joint research project that deals with the aesthetic-affective modeling of the national in the Early Modern period. It examines how language, literature, visual arts, architecture, and music contributed to the formation of national identity. The research project in Mainz focuses on the persistence of the national in the Early Modern period and investigates the inherent logic and impact of the national in Europe. The project aims to formulate a new historical perspective that takes the pre-modern era and its national aspects seriously. It emphasizes that the Early Modern period was not just a phase on the way to the nation-state, but that it is important to examine the specifics of a pre-modern understanding of nations. The project also deals with the role of arts and media in the construction and manifestation of the national. The given list includes a number of books and articles that deal with various aspects of the emergence of nations and nationalism in the Early Modern period.
