- Abstract
The number of mites varied between 0.44 and 8.5 mites/cm of basement membrane with no significant difference ( I P i = 0.61) between males [average 3.17 mites/cm; standard deviation (SD) 1.56] and females (average 3.80 mites/cm; SD 3.50). B Background b - Southern sea otters ( I Enhydra lutris nereis i ) rely on intact pelage for thermoregulation, and thus clinically significant demodicosis and associated alopecia can cause morbidity and death. Perioral skin had the highest proportion of mite-positive sections and highest mite density occurred in chin with <=60 mites/section (Table 2). Our goals were to describe I Demodex i sp. distribution and density across key anatomical regions, estimate the prevalence of mite infestation in southern sea otters, and assess mite presence in relation to defined lesions and host risk factors.
