- Abstract
The article presents information on a study regarding mitochondrial antibodies in primary biliary cirrhosis. The mitochondrial inner-membrane autoantigen reacting with the serum of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, was purified up to fifty-fold by centrifugal fractionation of sub-mitochondrial fragments obtained by hypotonic swelling and ultrasonication. Disruption of mitochondria by osmotic swelling and ultrasound leads to fragmentation of the inner membranes and release of the loosely bound components.
