- Abstract
During de past decades the citation count has been used and inserted in the scientific evaluation system. Nevertheless, many critics to the perception that a high number of citation leads to a high quality or high relevance has been constructed and discussed by the scientific community around the world. The research applies the categorization proposed by Ahmed and others (2004), which intends to bring evidence to the reasons why citations are applied to 22 articles indicated by 12 researchers in the field of Pneumology. Those articles were indicated by its authors as the most quality and the most relevant ones and analyzed through content analysis. In this first part of the study, 44 citing articles were analyzed from the total of 144 articles. The results show that 47,8% of the citations were motivated by category A: historical background, give credit to previous work, same subject concept. 25% were motivated by category B: description of other relevant work, discussion of details or results. Explanation on how the theory must be used. 13,6% were motivated by category C: make specific use of information or data contained in a cited paper. 9.1% motivated by category F: use of methodology. The citing author made use of a practical or theoretical technique given in the cited paper. 4.5% were motivated by category D: supplying information or data for comparison. The citing author made use of a cited article to obtain information that was used for comparison. This research aims to reveal not only the citing motivations but mostly contribute for a more adequate use of the citation counts as a research assessment tool in the subject area of Pneumology.
