- Abstract
On November 30, 2016, at 18:25 local time, an earthquake was located 4.4 km northwest of Capellades de Alvarado, Cartago, Costa Rica, the magnitude was Mw = 5.4. This event generated seismic intensities from III to VII in the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI). The central region of the country presented the greatest effects, with specific landslides; home, roads and basic services, such as drinking water and electricity were damaged. Historically, this region has been affected by important earthquakes, occurred between 1841-1851, 1910-1912 and 1951-1955. Since 1950 the events of largest affectation are the Patillos earthquake of December 30, 1952, Ms = 5.9, the Piedras Negras earthquake of December 22, 1990, Mw = 6.0 and the Cinchona earthquake of 08 January 2009, Mw = 6.1. This research shows a macroseismic intensities analysis and the spatial temporal distribution of the last four historical events located in the central region of Costa Rica, emphasizing in the Capellades earthquake, for being the most recent.
