- Abstract
This article presents the clinician's corner feature which looks at pulmonary hypertension among patients with congenital hemolytic anemias such as sickle cell anemia and thalassemia and in those with HIV infections. Many of these patients develop moderate to severe pulmonary hypertension that leads to heart failure and death. It is estimated that there are 30 million patients with hemolytic anemias and 40 million HIV patients worldwide so treatment and prevention of heart disease in these populations is vital. The article presents data on the diseases and efforts to screen, diagnose and treat at risk patients.
