- Abstract
The article discusses research on the use of statins, which have antioxidant activity and could add to the risk for age-related cataract. The association of statins and incident nuclear cataract, the most common type of age-related cataract, is the focus of this study. Research methods include the Beaver Dam Eye studies in Wisconsin. Data includes participants' characteristics, the distribution of nuclear, cortical, posterior subcapsular cataracts, and duration of statins exposure. The authors suggest that statin use is associated with a lower risk of nuclear cataract. Simvastatin users developed significantly fewer nuclear cataracts.
