- Abstract
Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) has been associated with an increased risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. The DM2 is associated with other risk factors for dementia, such as age, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, obesity and depression. Considering the high prevalence of DM2 is important to assess whether this condition represents a risk in older Mexican to develop dementia because both threaten to substantially increased as a result of population aging. Objective: to evaluate the association of DM2 with the presence of MCI or dementia in older Mexican of urban and rural areas. Method: study of fixed cohort tracking in subjects living in urban and rural areas without dementia followed for three years. The total sample of 1,194 subjects over 65 years. DM2 was diagnosed according to the criteria of the American Diabetes Association, MCI according to the Petersen´s criteria of and dementia according to DSMIV criteria and the algorithm 10/66. Results: the incidence rate of dementia in subjects with DM2 was 0.029, the incidence rate of MCI in subjects with DM2 was 0.018. Subjects with DM2 had 1.87 times the risk of developing dementia than those without DM2 (HR 1.87, CI 1.2-2.7). On the other hand, we found no statistically significant association with the development of MCI in subjects with DM2. Conclusions: subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus are at increased risk of developing cognitive impairment but not dementia.
